what i’ve been up to ~~~ (sailing w @grace.gosz, stitching up a custom tie with fabric scraps for a whole saturday, ruckus cuddles of course, and reading poems and meeting poets, a damn good time!!)

new poem for my favorite drag queen in this very cool, big, shiny print edition of Blood Tree Literature! 🥀 i’ve only posted a snippet here so you’ll have to grab a copy from them if you wanna read the whole thing—there’s a ton of amazing poets featured in this special edition too!

some snippets of a series of concrete poems i created over july, which are also ekphrastic poems inspired by tromp l’oeil works (that’s french for “to deceive the eye”).

i don’t always have the patience for more visual work, but these pieces felt more clear-cut, methodical, and meditative. it was kinda meta sticking one letter on at a time for the upper right piece in particular. makes me want a typewriter or to hand-write final drafts (most of my first drafts are hand written!) even more. i like the feeling of words and the physical creation of them being in closer proximity.

anyway, hoping one day these will live in a collection or publication so you can see them in their entirety! i’m also considering selling them once that’s the case... tbd!

unreal first trip ever to the big apple 🍎🪩went to see the picture of dorian gray, saw other portraits in abundance, and took some of our own.

1-2) straight from the plane to the park
3-4) la cabra cardamom latte is the one i’ll be dreaming of forever. and i’ll be replaying sarah snook absolutely killing the best stage show i’ve ever seen in my head for all time. i don’t think these can be topped.
5-6) a little museum here, a little library there, y’know…
7-8) brooklyn field trip to thrift, see @daffoband, look at all the lights from the other side
9) at MoMA fascinated by hilma af klint

i saw this piece in his studio in a columbia college basement during my time there. a few key decisions he’d made in its creation struck a cord with me. the subject of the piece (there is a subject!) is turned away from the viewer, as if i were following the subject somewhere. the roiling colors and nearly metallic gray felt like it expressed rapid, flowing internal movement in the subject. it made me think of the mesmerizing way flames move. the subtle glow of the underpainting below the dark background wasn’t something i noticed until more recently, but those flames, that movement, is just under the surface everywhere.

2) my dad interviews me. just before the clip he asked me to say hi to grandma and grandpa and i said “there’s no grandma and grandpa here.” him: can you say hi to grandma and grandpa? me: hi grandma and grandpa him: can you dance for them? me: what? him: can you dance for them? me: uh, i have tennis shoes on
*dancing ensues*
3) another selection from the dance routine to that good ol’ CCM music
4) my mom always slayed with the fits
5) changing “get out of my way!” to “please can you get out of my way?”
6) birthday!
7) knocked out in our house in ohio. dad’s commentary is the best here.

9) big sister vibes with lil brother in his favorite blanket nest

i’ve since retitled my double exposure poem series to be “diplopia,” the word for seeing double, often due to dizziness. happy to have the initial title published, too, because both versions are important!

🏡 home has been many places for me in short spurts of time, though my earliest concept of it is rooted in the fields of central Illinois.

home is all your people in close proximity, or at least within driving distance, and it starts with a place: land and plants and sky and big bodies of water. i’ll be bringing my best little house on the prairie childhood and probably things i’ve written about my transplant life in Chicago to @comfort_station. excited to listen to all the poets in this lineup crafted by @treoncalhoun.

hope to see lots of you there ⭐️ p.s. swipe through to see me and eli cooking dinner in our cleveland home five years ago :)
